Question by bpjow: Configuring SSL HostHeaders in IIS6 with Wildcard Cert?
Per Microsoft documentation, after configuring SSL host headers with a wildcard cert, you must configure secure bindings on each website “to prevent unauthorized use of the certificate.” I understand why you should configure secure bindings afterward (otherwise the site can be still be accessed via both http and https) but how does doing so actually prevent unauthorized use of the cert itself?

Or maybe the question could be reworded like this… if you DON’T configure secure bindings afterward, how is THE CERTIFICATE somehow vulnerable to “unauthorized use”?

I was actually planning on posting this to some other ‘more technical’ forums like experts-exchange, but to be honest, yahoo questions is often faster (as you’ve proven ). Thanks again!

OK. So let’s first examine what secure bindings are. They tell the certificate that only certain IIS web servers may use this certificate. Remember that it’s a wildcard cert, right, so you’re gonna put it on multiple web sites, like www.mysite.com, and mail.mysite.com, and answers.mysite.com. So secure bindings say which xxx.mysite.com’s are allowed to use the certificate.

So now let’s say you don’t activate secure bindings. Let’s also say that Hacker X has poisoned AT&T’s DNS servers to think that hacker-x.mysite.com is at the IP address of Hacker X’s server. Now he can make links to hacker-x.mysite.com, and because you haven’t enabled secure bindings, people will go to hacker-x.mysite.com, get a VALID certificate for YOUR WEB SITES, and now assume that hacker-x.mysite.com is safe; then people get infected with Hacker X’s viruses because they thought they were at your site.

OK. I think I’ve explained it. Now explain something to me: if you’re savvy enough to be talking about SSL, IIS, and wildcard certs, then why are you asking this question on Yahoo Answers instead of some Microsoft Forum?
